(No coven or crystal grids necessary!)
Today marks the Winter Solstice, a sacred and ancient festival of midwinter when the sun appears to briefly hold still and for one magical moment, the distribution of light and darkness is equal. At midwinter, the sun “stands still” for this deep inhale of a moment in time, giving us the opportunity to embrace the coming New Year and the hope and promise it brings.
No matter your own faith tradition, here are some lovely Winter Solstice rituals that can help to connect you to nature, to the planetary forces at work, and to thousands of years of human history.
Even if it’s cold or dreary, its actually part of the wonderful experience of midwinter to notice what plants and animals thrive now. Take a walk and find a clearing. Look up to the sun, maybe even watch the sunset, and build a nature shrine out of found items from your surroundings; feathers, branches, fallen leaves, moss, stones. It will be beautiful. Then take some time to sit quietly and contemplate on your aspirations for the coming months.
Make a circle of light!
This Winter Solstice happens to also fall on the New Moon. The dark moon is always a time of reflection and intention setting; what do you want to manifest for yourself, for your life in this cycle? Well, the New Moon on the Winter Solstice asks us to vision even bigger! What do we see for ourselves in this life? See it, make it real in the vision, surrounded by a circle of white fairy lights or candles, write this vision down or even speak it out loud! AS ABOVE SO BELOW, I WILL IT TO BE, IT WILL BE SO!
Share a Meal!
The sharing of food has been a part of Yule/Midwinter and Solstice traditions for nearly a thousand years. Cook something special to you, share it with others. It needn’t be an elaborate meal (though it could be), but the ritual of cooking signifies faith in the return of the abundance of Spring.
Whatever you choose, let it be organic, allow your ritual to be YOURS. It should flow from you with no direction, as if you have known this dance for all time.
Merry Blessings on this sacred day.
